Recognising Male Care Workers

We understand that within the care industry, carers are predominantly female, therefore our male care workers often get overlooked and go unnoticed. We want to break the stereotype that ‘all carers are female’ and recognise the value that male carers bring to their role. At CRT we foster a supportive and inclusive environment and want to make that shown to all.

Benefits

All carers, no matter their gender, bring their own skills and unique perspective to their role. However we want to discuss the attributes that male caregivers bring and why we should have more within the industry.

Provides more options to our service users.

Some of our service users, particularly those who are male may prefer to have a male caregiver. Having a carer of the same gender can help them to feel more comfortable. If the service user is more comfortable, it ensures that their needs are understood better. Although service users have the right to express their preference (2008 Health and Social Care Act), they may feel nervous to do so. However, if they are more comfortable with a male caregiver, the service user may be inclined to communicate more about their needs, preferences and comfort and with this feel happier with the care that they are receiving.

The carer and service user may be able to relate more.

With some health issues being specific to genders, they’re more likely to understand and relate more to their service user. With this, they’ll be able to establish a deeper connection resulting in more effective support.

Promotes inclusivity amongst the industry and creates role models.

With more male carers working in the industry, we can help to reduce the stigma surrounding this ‘gendered’ role. Alongside this it encourages younger people to consider a career within the care industry, regardless of their gender.
